1971 CanAm Mod for Grand Prix Legends – Released

Back in November 2010, a first sports car racing mod was released for Grand Prix Legends and for those GPL lovers who have a thing for powerful sports cars, an impressive new mod has been released.

The mod brings the 1971 CanAm season to Grand Prix Legends, featuring iconic cars such as the Ferrari 712M and the Porsche 917/10 that raced in what many consider to be the greatest and most spectacular sports car championship of all time.

So dust off that trusted GPL CD and give an all-time classic another spin with some brand new content made by one of the most dedicated communities virtual racing has ever seen.

Included Cars

McLaren M8B/C/E
McLaren M8D
Lola T260
Lola T222
Ferrari 712M
McLaren M8F
Porsche 917/10
Shadow MkII

The creators have put together a beautiful website with info on all included cars and detailed instructions on how to get going with the mod.

    Thanks for this mod! :)

GPL is still alive after over 12 years, amazing!

I basically drove nothing else for over 6 years, it was just so much ahead of anything else. Still today the driving sensation and level of simulation is hard to match!

That McLaren looks amazing. I do wonder what the handling will be like, I mean as far as I know the GPL engine couldn’t handle aerodynamics, how important was this factor on these cars?

  • Art J

Old physics engine couldn’t handle downforce or aero lift (though the drag was modelled properly) but quite a few years ago modders managed to add these to original code. GPL Can-Am mod is no exception and you have adjustable rear wing on these things, which does make a difference to speed and handling of the cars.

  • Alejandro Gorgal

Ahh that’s awesome, thanks for the explanation.

GPL is dying TBH. This is so pointless.

Is there a solution for triple screens for GPL? It’d be tough to go back to a single and I’d love to play GPL again, outdated graphics and all. I’ll always have a soft spot for that sim.

Only pointless for those that don’t fancy getting their feet wet with this new mod. I suspect there’ll be a lot of takers.

  • Art J

I’ve been reading about GPL “dying” for almost 7-8 years. Well, must be hard creature to kill then ;). The simple fact is – if there’s no proper replacement (dedicated to historic F1s / prototypes racing), there will still be some interest in this old platform. Example is visible above – with rF community not giving a flying sh..t about FINISHING at least one proper Can-Am mod, someone else (GPLers in this case) had to do it.

Well, I’ve been playing it for a long time using a triple screen config. Here is a video i did a few years ago, but a few rigs after i can still play it on 3 screens (check at 3:38):

Wow a new mod for GPL I think I will crown the sim the longevity champ!

After much effort I managed to install both the Can Am and Sportscar mod. However, I have a problem which I can’t solve. My driving screen is smaller than the PC screen and looks like it’s overlapping the previous page.
How do I fix this ? I am soooooo frustrated. Can anyone help me ?

I don’t understand what You mean by “screen overlapping previous page”, but I’d go to srmz.net forum and search/ask for advice over there. Guys are driving GPL on all current single/triple screen configs, so there’s no problem which cannot be solved.

I’d really like to thank you for your reply.  I figured it out.  I selected the wrong vid setting.
